Norwood will honor one of its most distinguished citizens this Memorial Day with the unveiling of a permanent memorial to Dr. Frederick A. Cleveland, whose long record of public service left a lasting imprint on the town’s civic and educational life.
The ceremony will take place at 2 o’clock in the afternoon, when members of the School Committee, the Chamber of Commerce, and representatives of various local organizations will gather for formal dedication exercises.
A Park Renamed in His Honor
The memorial—a stone tablet with a bronze plaque—will stand at the former Bond Street Playground, which was officially renamed “Frederick Albert Cleveland Park” by vote of the citizens at a special town meeting in April 1946.
At that same meeting, residents also appropriated funds for the creation of the memorial tablet, reflecting the community’s deep respect for Dr. Cleveland’s contributions.
Delays in Crafting the Memorial
Although the dedication was originally expected sooner, the project encountered delays in securing the proper type of stone and finalizing the inscription for the bronze plaque. With both now completed, the town is prepared to unveil the memorial in fitting fashion on Memorial Day.
Honoring a Life of Service
Dr. Cleveland’s name is closely associated with Norwood’s civic development, educational progress, and community leadership. The dedication of a park in his honor ensures that future generations will remember his work and the esteem in which he was held.
For those wishing to explore more about his legacy, the story of Frederick Albert Cleveland remains an important chapter in Norwood’s history.
