Guild School Recreation Center Project & Eliot Field Renovation-August 26, 1980

The Norwood Permanent Building Committee announced that six architectural firms have been invited to submit proposals and participate in September interviews for the major renovation of the Guild School into a new community recreation center. Committee Chairman Roger Pellitier noted that the firms responded directly to advertisements placed in professional publications, though additional firms may still be considered.

The six competing architectural firms asked to submit proposals are:

• Korslund, LeNormand & Quann Inc. of Norwood
• Brian G. Novack Associates of Norwood
• Campbell & Searson of Cambridge
• TAMS of Boston
• Rich, Lang & Cote Inc. of Newton

Eliot Field Renovation and Recreation Scheduling

In related municipal recreation updates, the contract to design and oversee the renovation of Eliot Field in South Norwood—which is slated to replace the existing Civic Center field—has been awarded to Norwood Engineering.

With Norwood Hospital scheduled to take over the current Civic Center field property next summer, local residents and sports leagues raised concerns regarding potential field shortages for the upcoming baseball season. However, Pellitier assured the community that the recreation department has successfully arranged to reschedule affected games to alternative fields. Furthermore, Pellitier explained that the extended timeline will benefit the project: “Eliot Field will have an extra growing season after renovations are complete,” with the new facility expected to open in the spring of 1982.

To fund the physical construction of both the Guild School recreation center and the Eliot Field upgrades, officials anticipate that a special town meeting will be called later in the fall to appropriate the necessary capital funds.
