Motorists traveling along Route 1 through Norwood, Westwood, and Dedham will soon experience enhanced highway safety. Construction is currently underway on a massive 11,650-foot safety barrier designed to separate the heavily traveled north and southbound lanes.
Project Details and Safety Features
The project—slated for completion by December—features sturdy steel uprights that have already been erected along the median. Once fully finished, the barrier installation will include:
- A protective chain-link fence installed along the Westwood sections to prevent pedestrians and stray objects from darting across lanes.
- Specialized deflector guard rails constructed at all bridge abutments and piers to protect motorists from hazardous structural impacts.
The multi-town highway safety initiative, photographed by staff photographer Kenneth F. McLean, aims to curb crossover accidents along one of the region’s busiest commercial and commuter corridors.
