More than four decades of dedicated medical service were celebrated recently when Norwood Hospital staff, trustees, and nursing groups gathered at the King Philip Restaurant in Wrentham to honor Miss Lillian B. Strout, R.N., upon her retirement as the hospital’s director of nurses.

During the festive retirement dinner, Miss Strout was presented with a special gift of appreciation by Mrs. Ruth T. Abraham, R.N., assistant director of nurses. The gala event was just one of several celebratory functions hosted by various departments within the hospital during Miss Strout’s final week of active employment.

A Distinguished Nursing Career Spanning Four Decades

Miss Strout’s remarkable career in nursing and hospital administration spans deep roots in both civilian healthcare and military service:

  • 1925: Graduated from her professional school of nursing.
  • 1928: Arrived at Norwood Hospital to begin her tenure as a head nurse.
  • 1944: Answered the nation’s call during World War II, joining the Army Nurse Corps with the rank of captain and serving abroad with the 135th Evacuation Hospital in Germany.
  • 1948: Returned to Norwood Hospital, serving briefly as a nursing instructor before appointment as assistant superintendent of nurses.
  • 1953: Appointed as the hospital’s Director of Nursing, a leadership post she held with distinction until her retirement.

Hospital trustees, nursing supervisors, and administrative colleagues praised Miss Strout for her unwavering leadership, decades of clinical excellence, and profound impact on patient care at Norwood Hospital.
