A historical meeting room in Norwood, Massachusetts, showing a man in a suit handing a book to another man in a vest. A military figure in uniform stands in the background, with posters regarding school committee elections and wartime needs visible on the walls.

Norwood’s School Committee found itself one member short this week after Committeeman William F. J. Nolen entered the United States Army. Nolen is the second town official to leave for military service, following library board member Francis Murphy, now stationed in the Northwest.

Under Massachusetts statute, the vacancy will be filled by a joint ballot of the selectmen, town clerk, town moderator, and town treasurer. The departure comes at a time when Norwood’s schools are already adapting to wartime shortages, civil defense duties, and shifting enrollments.

Nolen’s induction reflects a broader pattern across town government, where civic leaders—many with young families and longstanding community roles—have stepped away from local service to join the national war effort.
