Trumpet Player to Perform in Two Major Holiday Parades Under Paul Lavalle

When families tune in to their televisions on Thanksgiving morning and New Year’s Day, the Hoffman household at 17 Hemlock St. (noted in archive photo captions at 15 Hemlock St.) will have an extra-special reason to watch. Seventeen-year-old Gary Hoffman, a senior at Norwood High School, has been selected to play lead trumpet in the prestigious McDonald’s All-American Band.

Gary will perform in both Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City and the Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena, California. Selected on the recommendation of Norwood music director Paul M. Alberta, Gary will rehearse and march alongside elite student musicians from across the nation under the direction of Paul Lavalle of Radio City Music Hall.

Excitement is running high among his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph H. Hoffman, his five brothers, and one sister. Reflecting on her son’s relentless dedication, Mrs. Hoffman smiled, “He has worked so hard. But it’s not hard work for him because he enjoys it so. The difficulty for us is in getting him to stop practicing… Can you imagine listening to two hours of scales?”

Music director Alberta praised the young musician’s exceptional character: “Gary is a hard worker and will succeed at anything. He is one of the most outstanding students I have ever had here, musically and academically. He is a very, very dedicated young man.”

A Versatile Achiever in Music, Chess, Gymnastics, and Academics

Gary’s musical journey began at age 10 when he picked up the family trumpet after his older brother Joseph lost interest. Transitioning from school lessons in the fifth grade to private instruction—currently studying under Ronald Christianson, a Stoughton High teacher who also teaches in Norwood—Gary performs with the Norwood High marching band, jazz ensemble, and wind ensemble. His musical highlight prior to the national band selection was touring Austria, Italy, Switzerland, and France in the summer of 1972 as part of Norwood High’s historic 17-day European cultural exchange tour.

Beyond his musical prowess, Gary is a remarkably well-rounded student:

  • Academics: Ranked third in his entire senior class and plans to major in both music and chemistry in college next year, noting, “I like science, and that’s not unusual for a musician.”
  • Chess: An avid chess player who ranked 13th among 300 students when the Norwood High chess team traveled to the national tournament in Chicago.
  • Athletics: Co-captain of the Norwood High gymnastics team.
  • Employment: Works part-time as a busboy at a local Norwood restaurant.

When asked if he was a fan of McDonald’s, the nationwide fast-food chain sponsoring the band, the grounded senior replied with a smile: “I like their fishburgers.”
