On the evening of July 14, 1981, the Norwood Board of Selectmen held a special presentation to honor Mary Elizabeth Cleary, a local resident who had been awarded a prestigious Rhodes Scholarship.
Mary Elizabeth Cleary, a 1975 co-valedictorian at Norwood High School, had gone on to graduate summa cum laude from Dartmouth College, where she also achieved election to Phi Beta Kappa. Her selection for the Rhodes Scholarship marked a historic milestone, as she was reportedly the first native of Norwood and the first female graduate from Dartmouth College to earn the honor. In recognition of these achievements, the selectmen presented Mary Elizabeth Cleary with a plaque featuring the town seal. The scholarship was set to provide Mary Elizabeth Cleary with an annual stipend of approximately $16,000, covering her tuition and living expenses at Somerville College of Oxford University in England for the next two to three years of her advanced academic studies.
