Youth Drop-In Center Set to Launch Downtown Basement Operations Amid Summer Activity Concerns

NORWOOD — The Adrienne Coffee House is finalized to begin its second summer operational season within the next two weeks under the proactive leadership of Scott Stilwell, one of the facility’s energetic young founders.

A significant new feature for this season will be the inclusion of the Mole-Hole Boutique, an integrated specialty marketplace running directly alongside the main coffee house. The boutique is designed as an expressive outlet where local youth can market and sell various handmade handicrafts produced during the winter months.

Stilwell, who functions as the full-time director of the project though compensated strictly on a part-time basis, is deeply familiar with the downtown basement site. He personally helped transform the subterranean venue into the town’s first rough coffee house layout during its inaugural run last summer. Reflecting on past operations, Stilwell noted that one major obstacle the venue faced last season was its tendency to attract an overly restricted demographic. High school students frequently identified the coffee house exclusively with their specific peer group, limiting broader engagement.

“This year I’d rather see more function and less wall building,” Stilwell stated. “I think we learned a lot last summer. There are a lot of kids floating around and it could be a rough summer if we don’t get something going”.

Addressing ongoing community perceptions, Stilwell spoke candidly about the facility’s underlying mission: “Our function is to help. You can’t deny that it is a drop-in center, but it is also an information center, a place for constructive relaxation with something for the kids to do”.

In addition to providing a safe social space, the Adrienne Coffee House is expanding its supportive programs to assist visitors experiencing serious personal crises. The center will offer direct referral services connecting local youths with professional guidance counselors and therapeutic help when required. Staffing infrastructure will also be augmented this year with the formal addition of a professional director, whose appointment was officially confirmed yesterday.
