The Rev. James W. Lane, O.C.—formerly of West Roxbury and Norwood—will receive his Mission Cross during a solemn departure ceremony and concelebrated Mass this Sunday at 7 p.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Church, located at 555 Washington St.

Following the service, a public reception for family, relatives, and friends will be held in the church hall. Father Lane is scheduled to depart September 10 for missionary work in Lima, Peru.

Father Lane is deeply rooted in a family devoted to religious life. He is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas M. Lane and the brother of Miss Theresa A. Lane and Francis X. Lane of 75 Prospect St. Three of his siblings are also active in religious orders: his sisters Sister Noreen Thomas and Sister James Noreen serve with the Sisters of Charity of Convent Station, N.J., while his brother John J. Lane studies at the Queen of Peace Seminary in Jaffrey Center, N.H. His other surviving siblings include Matthew F. Lane of Auburn, N.Y., Andrew P. Lane of Westwood, and Mrs. Mary Sloper of East Walpole, alongside the late James J. Lane of the U.S. Marine Corps.

A graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Jamaica Plain, Father Lane attended the Carmelite Seminary in Hamilton from 1955 to 1957 before entering the seminary in 1958. He earned his bachelor’s degree from St. Bonaventure University in Olean, N.Y., and was ordained in June 1965 at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. For the past year, he resided at the Carmelite house of theology, Whitfriars Hall, in Washington, D.C., where he completed his master’s degree in theology, and spent the summer assisting with family retreats at the Carmelite Retreat House in Hamilton.

During Sunday’s service, the Mission Cross will be presented by The Very Rev. Peter T. Sherry, O.C., prior of the Carmelite Seminary, while the sermon will be delivered by The Very Rev. Dennis Cummins, O.C., of Our Lady of Mount Carmel High School in Auburn, N.H. Father Lane belongs to the Carmelite Province of the Most Pure Heart of Mary, headquartered in Barrington, Ill., which maintains missions in Lima and Sicuani, Peru, as well as Santiago, Chile.
