Expressing deep concern over aging infrastructure, the Norwood School Committee has called for an immediate investigation into potential electrical wiring hazards at the Norwood Junior High School to determine whether emergency repairs are urgently required.

The inquiry was initiated after Superintendent of Schools Philip O. Coakley delivered an alarming report on the condition of the facility’s electrical grid. Dr. Coakley informed committee members that the original wiring system—installed back when the building was constructed in 1917—remains largely unchanged “in many places,” creating a potential safety hazard. Describing ongoing electrical maintenance as a “patchwork job,” school officials noted that while new service lines had recently been brought into the building, the overall electrical capacity and power structure remain inadequate.

Furthermore, Light Department Superintendent William Kates has been formally asked to investigate the wiring conditions, following earlier evaluations by the light department suggesting that existing power structures were insufficient. School Committeeman Francis Sheehan urged a comprehensive study to establish whether emergency repairs are warranted, noting such work could potentially be executed without waiting for formal town meeting approval. Town counsel is also expected to review the administrative logistics surrounding proposed school infrastructure fixes.
