Following the successful completion of Norwood’s first town-sponsored summer school program—which enrolled approximately 330 local students in remedial coursework—the Norwood School Committee is evaluating future administrative structures, including a proposal to institute a nominal student fee.
Superintendent Philip O. Coakley presented a comprehensive report detailing the inaugural summer session, noting that progress reports for every participating student have already been forwarded to their respective home schools. To enhance future planning, Dr. Coakley recommended that the administration prepare a detailed prospectus and secure early teacher commitments by March of each year, ensuring better organization and curriculum stability. The committee also agreed to explore expanding the curriculum beyond remedial classes to include academic enrichment courses.
Addressing program financing, Richard Savage, director of the summer school program, recommended charging a token fee for future participants. Savage suggested that a small fee could help augment town appropriations while serving as an added incentive for parents and students to maintain consistent attendance throughout the session. However, because the public school system is publicly funded, the committee noted that town counsel must first review the proposal to determine the legal feasibility of levying any student charges.
