Parks Seals Victory in Sudden-Death Stroke Session

As darkness fell across Alden Field, the Norwood High School field hockey team celebrated a thrilling, hard-fought 2-1 victory over host Duxbury High School in the Division 1 South Sectional tournament.

With the contest deadlocked after regulation and two seven-on-seven double-overtime periods, the matchup proceeded to sudden-death penalty strokes. After Duxbury senior Courtney Wright fired her attempt wide of the net, Norwood junior Lauren Parks stepped up and fired the game-winning stroke past Duxbury goalkeeper Lauren Beatrice.

“It was definitely exciting,” said Norwood head coach Sharon Steich. “The kids were a little nervous at the beginning, but they calmed down toward the end of the first half.”

Second-Half Scoring and Late Drama Force Double Overtime

Following a scoreless first half characterized by cautious play from both sides, Norwood asserted control in the second stanza. Sophomore Meghan Staffierie struck first, redirecting a shot directly in front of the cage to give the visiting Mustangs a 1-0 advantage.

Duxbury head coach Peter Saggese gathered his team with just over three minutes left on the clock to organize a final attack. With only 30 seconds remaining in regulation, Duxbury sophomore Emily Colton fed Rebecca Tull, who beat Norwood junior keeper Erin McKay to tie the game 1-1 and push the contest into extra time.

“We made too many errors down the stretch,” Steich acknowledged. “most of my girls had been out there the entire game without substitutions, and they were a little tired.”

The tense 7-on-7 double-overtime period featured several near-misses for both squads:

  • Norwood junior Sam Geary broke loose on a breakaway, but Beatrice executed a crucial kick save.
  • The Mustangs generated three consecutive penalty corners with five minutes left in overtime, but sophomore forward Lindsay Harns was unable to connect on an open back-post setup.

Supported by Erin McKay’s steady presence in goal during the stroke-off, Norwood punched its ticket to the next round of the state tournament against Wellesley, bringing Duxbury’s season to a close at 11-7-1.
