11th-Seeded Mustangs Advance to Division 1 South Sectional Third Round
Proving that regular-season tournament seeds can be entirely deceiving, the Norwood High School field hockey team pulled off its second consecutive major postseason upset yesterday, eliminating third-seeded Marshfield High School 2-1 in the second round of the Division 1 South Sectional tournament.
Entering the postseason tournament as the No. 11 seed, Norwood (13-5-2) had already dispatched sixth-seeded Sandwich in the opening round. Facing a formidable Marshfield Rams team (16-3-1), the Mustangs established control early when Maria LoRusso set up Jennifer Chin on a breakaway, giving Norwood a 1-0 advantage just five minutes into the opening half.
Norwood vs. Marshfield Scoring Breakdown & Match Stats

- Game-Winning Goal (8:40 remaining): **Maria LoRusso** (scramble in front of Marshfield net).

Marshfield Rams (Eliminated: 1)
- Equalizing Goal (11:00): **Emily Waldron** (unassisted).
- Late Threat: Long blast by **Lindsay Bramwell** sat loose in the Norwood crease but went unrewarded.
- Final Record: 16-3-1 overall.
Postgame Coach Reflections
Marshfield head coach **Carol Anderson** praised Norwood’s strength: “Rankings are nice, but when it comes to the tournament it is all in how you match up… Norwood plays in a very good league (the Bay State League), and they are obviously ready for the tournament. My girls have no reason to hang their heads.”
Maria LoRusso Capitalizes for Late Game-Winner
Marshfield equalized six minutes after Norwood’s opening tally when Emily Waldron converted an unassisted effort. However, the Mustangs maintained territorial dominance throughout the remainder of the contest. After missing on two previous scoring chances earlier in the second half, LoRusso pounced on a wild scramble in front of the Marshfield net to punch home the decisive goal with 8:40 left on the clock.
A late surge by Marshfield nearly leveled the match when Lindsay Bramwell sent a long shot lying loose in the Norwood crease, but no Ram attacker could finish the rebound, securing the underdog victory as reported by Bob Buckley for The Patriot Ledger.
