A Hard-Fought Victory at Balch Field

On the bright, sun-drenched afternoon of July 21, 2001, the atmosphere at Balch Field crackled with the intensity of a high-stakes postseason rivalry.
The Norwood Post 70 team stepped onto the diamond to face their long-standing arch-rivals from Weymouth, marking the opening contest of a highly anticipated best-of-three American Legion Baseball District 6 series. For the players and the loyal spectators in the stands, the day promised a classic struggle between two determined programs, each looking to gain the upper hand in their quest for regional dominance.
The game began as a tightly contested pitcher’s duel. Weymouth sent Brian Tanguy to the mound, and he immediately established his presence, delivering a dominant performance that kept the Norwood hitters guessing. Over the course of five innings, Brian Tanguy displayed remarkable control and composure, racking up six strikeouts while surrendering only nine hits and a single walk. However, Norwood possessed an offensive spark that would prove difficult to extinguish. Drew Locke, serving as the offensive catalyst, emerged as a force to be reckoned with. Throughout the contest, Drew Locke terrorized the opposition, recording an impressive 3-for-4 showing at the plate. He consistently put the ball in play, driving in key runs and acting as the engine for the Norwood attack. His performance was nearly historic; he found himself inches away from hitting for the cycle, ultimately denied only when a well-struck ball to right-center field was skillfully tracked down by a Norwood outfielder.
As the game progressed, the momentum shifted back and forth, turning the afternoon into a genuine test of grit. While Weymouth managed to find offensive rhythm, the Norwood defense faced significant pressure, struggling to neutralize the persistent Weymouth lineup. Whenever it appeared that Weymouth might seize control, Norwood coach Tony Fruci was there to steady his squad. Tony Fruci maintained a constant dialogue with his players, rallying their spirits and ensuring that the team remained focused on the task at hand, regardless of the score.
The decisive turning point arrived in the bottom of the sixth inning, where a sudden collapse in the Weymouth defense allowed Norwood to seize control of the game. The inning began with a surge of momentum for Norwood as three consecutive singles loaded the bases with no outs. In a desperate bid to preserve the lead, Weymouth turned to relief pitcher Scott Sullivan. Despite his best efforts to extinguish the threat, the pressure of the moment combined with defensive mishaps proved insurmountable. A critical ground ball to second base was bobbled by the Weymouth infielder, allowing two runs to cross the plate. This defensive breakdown sparked a rally, as Norwood surged ahead, ultimately plating six runs in the frame to take a commanding lead.
Though they had fallen behind, Weymouth demonstrated the resolve that had defined their season. They mounted a courageous two-run rally in the seventh inning, narrowing the deficit and placing the tying run in scoring position. However, Norwood managed to hold the line, sealing a narrow 8-7 victory. This hard-fought win provided Norwood Post 70 with a vital 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series, setting the stage for a dramatic conclusion when the teams were slated to meet again at Balch Field on Saturday night.
Following the conclusion of the game, Tony Fruci reflected on the chaotic nature of the victory. “We gave them seven outs in one inning, and they scored six runs,” said Tony Fruci. “You just can’t afford to give a good team that many opportunities. We battled back in the seventh, but if you said to me before the game we’d score seven runs and win, I’d say you’re crazy.” Conversely, Weymouth coach Pete Tanguy maintained a gracious perspective on the performance of his young athletes. “They’re a good team,” said Pete Tanguy. “They’ve got some heavy hitters and good coaching. Everything fell to pieces when our starting pitcher gave up three consecutive singles in the sixth inning.” With the series hanging in the balance, the stage was set for the next encounter at Balch Field, where Weymouth aimed to force a deciding third game, while Norwood looked to capitalize on their newfound momentum.
