The town of Norwood is set to review five alternate plans for the replacement of Norwood Junior High School, with architectural estimates expected to be completed this week. The building committee chairman, Richard W. Kief, expressed hope that a decision could be made at an upcoming special town meeting.
A special meeting of the building committee has been scheduled for tonight at 7:30 in Town Hall to review the various cost estimates and plans. If all information is received, it will be submitted to the School Committee, which would then select the best program educationally and economically. Dr. Thomas A. Couch, School Committee chairman, stated that his committee could make a decision the same night it receives the figures, possibly leading to a definitive decision on the new school project.
Meanwhile, town meeting member Mark Brim is researching federal reimbursement options for restoring Norwood Junior High School to its original condition. The town could receive 100 percent reimbursement for the damage excluding insurance under the “spot disaster law” administered by the Department of Health, Education and Welfare (HEW). Mark Brim has contacted HEW officials concerning the federal aid possibility, adding a new financial dimension to the town’s ongoing deliberations regarding educational infrastructure and disaster recovery.
