Student Representatives Seek Constructive Solutions to New Hallway Access Limits

In response to a newly implemented administration policy designed to curb chronic vandalism—particularly in school restrooms—student council representatives Gary Cohen and Donna Sykes appeared before the Norwood School Committee last night to propose student-led alternatives.

The policy, which went into effect on Monday, restricts student movement between building areas outside of the standard five-minute passing periods. Teachers are now stationed at stairways and entrances throughout the day to monitor traffic. Under the rules, students eating lunch in the cafeteria must remain there for the entire 45-minute period, losing daytime access to the library and computer room. While acknowledging that the old building previously operated under a modified open campus plan, the student leaders emphasized they were not prematurely judging the policy’s effectiveness, but expressed concern over impending winter overcrowding in the cafeteria.

Student Council Initiatives & School Committee Action

Student Council Proposals

  • Smoking Area Reform: Miss Sykes suggested upgrading the outdoor smoking area—also impacted by vandalism—to secure student buy-in for property protection, while simultaneously launching an anti-smoking campaign.
  • Civic Engagement: Proposed bi-weekly “rap sessions” between students and local town officials to discuss youth concerns.
  • School Pride Projects: Suggested student-led improvement initiatives, pointing to recent student efforts painting library tables. School Committee Chairman **Richard Joseph** commended the council’s proactive approach.

Other School Committee Actions

  • Instructional Aides: Voted to hire three new instructional aides ($11,000 allocated within the existing budget) at the request of principals from the **Oldham**, **Callahan**, and **Willett** schools to support unusually large fifth-grade classes.
  • Late Bus Transportation: Agreed to explore rescheduling 4 p.m. late buses from Junior High School South to accommodate students from **Junior High School North** who currently lack late bus service across Route 1.
  • Custodial Grievance: Convened an executive session to hear a grievance from members of the junior custodians’ union.
