15-Year-Old Life Scout Rallies Local Troops for American Red Cross Drive

He may be knocking on doors right around Halloween, but Steven Wong, a 15-year-old sophomore at Norwood High School, is seeking life-saving donations rather than treats. With the assistance of all the Boy Scout troops in town, Steven has organized a major all-community blood drive scheduled for next Saturday at the First Baptist Church at Bond and Walpole Streets.

To ensure a strong turnout, scouts from every local troop have been going door-to-door, distributing registration cards, and scheduling specific appointments, while letters have been dispatched to local churches and civic organizations urging participation. Steven initiated the massive undertaking to fulfill the rigorous community service requirements for his Eagle Scout Badge, which he hopes to receive in November. Reflecting on the long hours spent organizing, creating posters, and campaigning, Steven remarked that it is all worthwhile: “Blood is badly needed and I am helping other people while helping myself to become an Eagle Scout.”

Red Cross Bloodmobile Schedule and Volunteer Support

The American Red Cross Bloodmobile unit will be stationed at the First Baptist Church from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. next Saturday, with local scouts assisting in setting up equipment and serving refreshments to donors.

While walk-ins are welcome and appointments are not strictly necessary, residents wishing to pre-register or schedule a specific time can call 769-1784 or fill out a registration card during the scouts’ neighborhood visits.
