Father William J. Maguire, Senior Curate at St. Catherine’s Church, Passes Away Suddenly at Age 52
Father William J. Maguire, senior curate at St. Catherine’s Church in Norwood, passed away suddenly on Tuesday following complications from a heart attack suffered on July 7. He had been hospitalized at Brockton Hospital until returning home a little over a week ago.
Born in West Bridgewater, Mass., on December 31, 1904, Father Maguire was ordained in June 1931 at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston by the late Cardinal O’Connell, offering his first solemn Mass at St. Thomas’ Church. Following his ordination, he served in the Immaculate Conception Parish in Everett under the late Msgr. Thomas MacCormack before eventually joining the clergy at St. Catherine’s in Norwood. Known as a dedicated scholar and eloquent preacher, he was deeply respected by his parishioners.
Calling hours were scheduled at the Hickey Funeral Home in Brockton, with Father Maguire’s body to be brought to St. Catherine’s Church on Friday afternoon ahead of a solemn Funeral Mass and burial at Calvary Cemetery in Brockton. The children’s Mass at 8 o’clock on Saturday was announced to be celebrated by the Rev. Joseph E. McDonald. Father Maguire is survived by his mother, Nellie, his sister, Rose, and his brothers, Owen, Frank, and Barry.
