Marking the completion of its successful 30-day session today, the Norwood public summer school program drew more than 600 local participants, with elementary students comprising the bulk of the enrollment alongside approximately 100 private school students. Directed by Lawrence Decareau—who teaches math at Junior High School North during the academic year—the program offered a diverse array of courses staffed by 21 local teachers and four student teachers.
While older students primarily attended to make up deficient credits or secure advance credits in English, reading, mathematics, science, Spanish, and U.S. history, director Decareau noted that enrichment classes proved remarkably popular among younger residents. Subjects such as art, music, clothing construction, woodworking, metalwork, and science experiences drew significantly more interest than traditional remedial arithmetic and reading-language arts. In addition to general classes, the session featured a specialized learning center program where about 40 students with learning disabilities received one-to-one tutoring from special services teachers in math, reading, speech, and physical education—a specialized track that has nearly doubled in enrollment since its inception three years prior. Costing residents just a $5 registration fee and a teacher or principal recommendation, the 15-year-old summer program continues to provide an affordable and expansive educational outlet for the community.
