Special Town Meeting is Planned for October 9th

With the text of the James J. Gormley report to selectmen on a year-round recreation program released to the press on Wednesday noon, and the total estimated costs figures released yesterday morning, an announcement is made that a special town meeting to decide on the recreation report will be held on Monday, October 9th.

While the recreation proposal has been before, selectmen for some weeks, it was not released until this week. Selectmen and the finance committee discussed it on Tuesday night. The year-round plan, to include the summer program, would cost the town $25,-269 as set up. Of this amount in the neighborhood of $14,000 is allocated to salaries: the remainder going to equipment and supplies.

Voters on October 9th will be asked to appropriate $5,117 or an amount for the last three months of this year. The $14,000 figure is set up on the basis of the $25,000 a year program.

While the figures given in the Gormley report set the total cost at $10,038 for the year, estimated figures for items not included in the report such as the director’s salary, janitors fees, etc, add $10,231 to the Gormley figure; $1000 is allowed for contingency; and $4000 is earmarked for the summer playgrounds, making the total for the year-round program, $25,269.

Of this $25,269 figure, $14,119 is earmarked for salaries, including janitor’s fees. The part-time director’s salary will be $50.00 per week.

An assistant for the boys and an assistant for the girls will each receive $30.00 per week.

Other salaries include two men as coach and umpire for baseball at $30 a week and a group leader for baseball at $20 a week. A similar rate of pay is set up for the three people in a basketball program. A boxing instructor will get $24 a week, while the tennis instruction salary is at $6 a night as in calisthenics, and a softball instructor will rate $4.75 a night.

Instruction salaries for music, dramatics, dancing, handicrafts, arts, food and nutrition, and dressmaking are at the $6 a night figure. The instructor at the Balch School recreation center will receive $30 a week.

Cost for water and gym for sports events and for use of halls or rooms sum up to a figure of $2,087.00. Equipment and supplies total for the program is $5,811.
