The Griffin Twins



Twins, a girl and boy, born to Mrs. Catherine Griffin and John (Bunny) Griffin of 100 Lincoln Street, are shown with their mother at the Norwood Hospital. Born last Sunday, the girl, on right arm of Mrs. Griffin weighed 6 pounds, 7 ounces, and the boy, 9 pounds, 7 ounces. The Griffins have five other children. Home for the weekend was Billy Frates of Prospect Street Bill has completed the first semester of his freshman year at Holy Cross.

New students at Boston University College of Business Administration are Joe Peattie of Washington Street and Jimmy Armstrong of Roosevelt Avenue.

Home from a cruise is Andy Yelapi of Sturtevant Avenue, who is in the U. S. Navy.

Among a group of Norwood Girls from St. George’s Syrian Church who attended a Federation meeting in Boston were the Misses Rita and Milda Eli«, Genevieve Tomm, and Marion Esper.

This week Johnny Balllunas of 6 Andrews Place and “Guido” Cisternelli of 15 St. James Avenue, entered into the Army.

Francis Novick of St. George Avenue has left for the Service to begin his basic training. He left last Sunday.

New residents of Norwood are Mr. and Mrs. William Abdallah who have moved here from Boston. Mr. and Mrs. Abdallah reside at 155 East Cross Street.

Mr. and Mr. Norman Parkhill of Fairview Road will be celebrating their wedding anniversary on Friday, February 13. Mr. and Mr. Parkhill have two children, Victorian and Suzan. They moved to Norwood from Rochester, New York a year ago, February 14, the following day, is Mrs. Parkhill’s birthday.

Mrs. Constance Carey is visiting her grandmother, Mrs. Edmund G. Dalton of Bond street, Norwood.

The Bird Flooring workers and members of Local No. 385 plan to hold their annual banquet this year on Sunday, Feb. 22, celebrating Washington’s birthday at the Norwood Junior High School A Holman Catered dinner and professional entertainment is to be part of the afternoon’s program.

Guests are welcome and member are asked to make ticket arrangements before next week, Thursday, Feb. 18 to their stewards. In charge of the affair are co-chairmen George Shickley, Jr. and Vito De Cicco.

Walter Adamonis of Neponset Street took in the professional tennis meet held at the Boston Garden last Monday evening, featuring world-famous Pancho Segura, Ken McGregor, Frank Sedgman, and Jack Kramer as tennis stylists.

Thrift Shop Notes

Each week finds a gratifying number of newcomers to Norwood becoming interested in the work of the Women’s Community Committee as they are called for donations to the shop. All the telephoning under a carefully worked out system is done by members of the Committee and questions about the shop and what is made possible in the way of service to the town through receipts are always welcomed. Of course the “backbone” is the nucleus of friends of the shop who year in and year out “save for the shop” — some of them over the whole period of 25 years during which the Committee has been in existence.

Do come in and browse around sometimes you find a bit of bric-a-brac which is interesting or just the right picture frame and so on. Clothing of all sizes and for both men and women is constantly coming in as well as household items and furniture for the early birds. If you have ANYTHING which you are discarding, please call Mrs. Meserve the Manager, at Norwood 7-2991 and the truck will call next Wednesday.

New Course For Expectant Parents To Start, Here Soon

The courses sponsored by the Women’s Community Committee for expectant mothers have been so successful and have so aroused the interest of prospective fathers also that a new “Course for Expectant Parents” is soon to begin.

Many communities have such courses for both of the prospective parents but Norwood’s just came about through the fathers who were interested and just appeared and stayed to learn.

Mrs. Kenneth Tatro, In charge of arrangements, reported the interest of these prospective dads to a recent meeting of the Community Committee and it was voted to invite the menfolk to the new course which is again to have Mrs. Ethel Conover, of the Red Cross Nursing Service as instructor.

The six consecutive lectures to be held at the Norwod Hospital will begin Monday evening March 2 and continue through April 6 and Is open to anyone in the towns serviced by the hospital without charge. It will include prenatal advice, baby care and a trip to the labor and delivery rooms and the nursery.

The group will be limited again to twenty and reservations may be made by calling Mrs. Tatro a Nor-wood 7-2944-W or Mrs. Arthur Allen, Norwod 7-0372. It is the earnest wish of the Committee that as many fathers as possible attend for it is felt they will enjoy their new responsibilities a great deal more with the added knowledge of these lectures and demonstrations.

Weekly Dance Friday Night

The weekly Recreation Department sponsored Friday Evening Dance for boys and girls of junior high school age will be held tomorrow evening at Soicai Hail of the Civic. George Farnham and his Orchestra will play for dancing from 7:30 to 10:00 and during these same hours, the other facilities of the building will be available to the young dancers.

Norwood Girl Scout News

Orders for Girl Scout cookies have now been completed and many thanks are extended to all who participated In the campaign. This includes parents, leaders, and customers. The troop who took the most orders for cookies are as follows: Troop 3 — Winslow School — leader, Miss McIntyre; Troop 9 — Shattuck School — leader, Mrs. Snider; Troop 10— Shattuck School — leader, Mrs. Papineau. It may Interest readers to note that the troop that out-sol all others is a troop of Brownies.

On Saturday, February 7, Miss Jane Mahoney and Miss Helen Balfour took their troop of scouts to the Mass. Hospital School in Canton to entertain the scouts and browinies. After a few spirited games, they- put on a talent- show for them. This was followed by a general singing period in which the Canton girls also took part. A few games were played by both troops, and than refreshments were served and favors were distributed which had been made by the Norwood girl scouts in their previous troop meetings.

On Tuesday evening, Feb. 3, the Leaders Club held their regular meeting at Day House. In spite of the inclement weather, many of the members were in attendance. After reports of the secretary and treasurer, Mrs. Thomas Clifford taught some songs. It is hoped that all troops will learn at least some of the songs in order that at the time of a get-together or rally, all troops will know the same ones.

Mrs. Marie Perner reported on the Splash Party to be held for all Norwood Girl Scouts at the Hyde Park YWCA during school vacation week — February 24th. There will be an opportunity for all girls to have a well-supervised swim time, to play in the gym, to bowl, and to do a little square dancing.

Mrs. Coleman Foley of the Council gave a report of the orders taken during the Cookie Campaign.

In order to get more leaders at the meetings so that more voting, more business, and better meetings may be held, each leader present at this meeting was asked to come and bring another leader to next month’s meeting. So if you’re a leader, mark March 3rd on your calendar now.

In the future these are plans for two Juliette Low parties in March, a basic training course for all leaders who have not yet received this training in April, and a general Girl Scout rally in May.

Refreshments brought the meeting to a very pleasant closing.

Jewish Women’s Council To Hear Rabbi Grossman

The Jewish Women’s Council of Norwood and the Norwood Hebrew Congregation are holding a joint meeting on Monday evening, February 16, at 8 o’clock, In the vestry of Temple Shaare Tefila. The evening’s program will include a talk given by Rabbi Benjamin L. Grossman, honorary vice president of the Rabbinical Association of Greater Boston.

Refreshments will be served by Mrs. Herbert Klein, Mrs. Norman Grossman. and Mrs. Leo Weinfield, the hostesses for the evening

Norwood Mother’s Club News

The Norwood Mother’s Club met at the Sports Centre Lounge on February 3rd.

The tea hostess of the afternoon was Mrs, Preston Neilson, who poured from a table that was attractively decorated with hearts and flags honoring St. Valentine and Both Lincoln’s and Washington’s birthdays. Assisting Mrs. Neilson were Mrs. Arthur Elwell and Mrs. Vincent Kenefick. The new china ware was in use for the first time and was admired by all.

It was announced that a food sale will be held at Sam’s Auto and Appliance Store, tomorrow, February 13th, at 11 a.m. under the direction of Mrs. Frank Hubley.

The speaker of the afternoon was Mr. William Christie who both entertained and informed us on the subject of Decorating through Analysing. Mr. Christie showed several samples of various fabrics and wallpapers and thoroughly discussed their relative designs and uses.

A very successful Fathers Night was held the following evening at Elks Hall under the chairmanship of Mr. Frank Flower. Members and their husbands enjoyed a roast beef dinner and afterwards danced to the music of Wit Phalen and his orchestra interspersed with vocal selections by the “Tune Timers” The entertainment was M.C’d by Mr. Raymond Berry.
