Awaiting death sentence in Dedham Jail, Ali Osman regains freedom

May 18, 1933-The Jury which has been hearing the evidence in the cases of Ahneed Osman and Ali Osman, charged with the murder of Nellie Keras, 9 years old, of Norwood last Christmas Day, brought in a verdict of guilty against Ahneed this afternoon and found Ali not guilty.

The Jury took the case at 11 o’clock this morning, went to lunch at 1, resumed deliberations at 2, and reported the verdicts at 3:30.

Judge Harold P. Williams immediately ordered the release of Ali who after securing his personal belongings in the Dedham Jail was taken away by friends.

Ahneed was sent back to the Dedham Jail and will remain there until he is sentenced to death. John M. Boyle, attorney for Ahneed, and Winfield S. Patterson, Ali’s lawyer, were not in court when the decision was announced.

Ahneed in his testimony accused Ali of the murder and Ali maintained that the child was killed by Ahneed.

The latter testified that on the day of the murder he and Ali had a party at Ahneeds home in Norwood over the apartment of the Keras family and that while he was out for cigarettes Ali killed the child. He testified that Ali confessed the crime to him and that he and Ali took the body to the cellar and placed it underneath a pile of wood.

Ahneeds story was that when he came back from a drug store he found the body of the child on the living room floor and Ali asleep on a bed.
