Son of Town Clerk, Dead at 28

Norwood mourns the passing of Jerome A. Pendergast, who died suddenly at his Pleasant Street home on the morning of May 15, 1933, at just 28 years old. The son of Town Clerk James E. Pendergast and Mrs. Pendergast, Jerome’s life was defined by remarkable intellect, perseverance, and quiet courage in the face of profound adversity.

Born in Norwood, Jerome attended local schools before continuing his education at the Perkins Institution for the Blind, where he excelled after losing his sight at age 13 in a gunpowder accident. His academic achievements carried him to Harvard College, where he graduated with high honors as a member of the Class of 1929. He went on to enter Harvard Law School, but declining health during his second year forced him to step away from the legal career he had worked so hard to pursue.

Despite these challenges, Jerome built a respected career in the insurance business in his hometown. He remained deeply involved in community and faith life, serving as a member of the Norwood Council, Knights of Columbus, and participating actively in St. Catherine’s Holy Name Society.

Jerome is survived by his parents and a large, devoted family: brothers Richard, John, William, Philip, and James, and sisters Mary and Noreen. His loss is felt deeply by all who knew him—family, friends, colleagues, and the many who admired his resilience and character.

A High Mass of Requiem will be celebrated on Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Church
