Thomas C. Lydon Assumes Duties as Norwood’s New Chief of Police
NORWOOD — May 31, 1945 — A familiar figure in Norwood law enforcement stepped into the town’s highest police office today as Thomas C. Lydon formally assumed his duties as Chief of Police. For Chief Lydon, the appointment marks the culmination of a thirty‑year career that began in the earliest days of the modern Norwood Police Department and has been distinguished by steady advancement, professional training, and a reputation for thorough investigative work.
Born and raised in Norwood, Chief Lydon joined the department in 1915, at a time when the town was rapidly expanding and the demands on local law enforcement were growing with it. His promotion to sergeant in 1932 followed years of dependable service, but it was his work that same year that brought him widespread recognition.
Rose to Prominence Through Major Investigation
In 1932, Sergeant Lydon led the successful investigation and prosecution of the murder of a young South Norwood girl, a case that gripped the community and required painstaking detective work. His handling of the investigation earned him professional respect throughout the region and demonstrated the methodical, disciplined approach that has characterized his entire career.
To further strengthen his skills, Chief Lydon completed specialized training with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, adding modern investigative techniques to his already extensive experience.
A Family Rooted in Service and Sacrifice
Chief Lydon resides at 188 Prospect Street with his wife and their four children. The family has known both pride and sorrow in service to the nation. One of his sons, Martin J. Lydon, served with the 8th Air Force during the war and was shot down over Switzerland during operations against Germany. His experience stands as a reminder of the sacrifices borne by so many Norwood families during the long years of conflict.
A Steady Hand for a Changing Town
As he steps into the role of Chief, Lydon brings not only decades of experience but also a deep understanding of the town he has served since his youth. His appointment comes at a time when Norwood, like communities across the nation, is transitioning from wartime conditions to the challenges of peace. The town’s rapid growth, increasing traffic, and expanding neighborhoods will require firm leadership and modern policing methods—qualities Lydon has demonstrated throughout his career.
With his long record of service, professional training, and deep roots in the community, Chief Thomas C. Lydon begins his tenure with the confidence of town officials and the respect of the citizens he has long protected.
