Mark 44th Anniversary Of Lithuanian Independence-This Day in Norwood History-February 15, 1962

At the February monthly meeting of the Knights of Lithuania, President Paul Zukas informed the members that a proclamation had been signed by Town Manager Walter Blasenak in observance of the 44th anniversary of Lithuanian Independence on February 16th.

Sunday, March 4th, is the date set for the presentation of a one-act comedy play written by Father Aloysium Klimas entitled “Jurgis Kuraitis.” The play is now in rehearsal under the direction of Mrs. Zita Zaronka. The cast Includes Mrs. Katherine Peredina, Miss Gema Douba, Miss Elizabeth Ann Kudirka, Messrs. Joseph Adakonis, Alge Vaitones, Algis Monaitis, Bronius Kovas, Jonas Martyshius.

In conjunction with the play, a typical Lithuanian supper will be served. Mrs. Paul Zukas is the committee chairman for this portion of the evening’s program. Mrs. Zukas and her committee have been working hard in planning a menu in the hopes of pleasing all who attend. Tickets may be obtained from any member of the K. of L. or in the vestibule of the church after each Mass.

An exhibit of Lithuanian Folk Art & Culture will be held at both Morrill Memorial Library and the South Norwood Branch Library February 16th to the 23rd. Mrs. Alge Vaitones reported that through the kind cooperation of local Lithuanians, many articles of interest, dating from the present time and over the past century, will be on display. This is a new endeavor and an invitation is extended to visit either library during this exhibit and get acquainted with the country of Lithuania that dates back to the year 1005.

Members of. the, K. of L. have been invited to a formal observance of Lithuanian Independence Day on Sunday, February 25th. The 9:15 Mass at St. George’s Catholic Church will be said for the persecuted Lithuanians. Dr. Balys Matulionis from Rhode Island will be guest speaker at 4 p. m. at the Lithuanian Hall. Other guests on this occasion will be the Lithuanian Sea Scouts of Boston. They will present a program of Lithuanian folk songs and dances for the public.

At the conclusion of the meeting, refreshments were served by the evening’s hostess, Mrs. Paul Zukas.
