The Polaroid Corp. was granted a special permit by the zoning board of appeals last night to use eight 12 by 60-foot trailers on company property to temporarily house personnel.
Chairman George M. Eysie said that the permit was granted under the terms of Section 18 of the town zoning bylaw, which states that such a permit can be granted for one year. The permit may be renewed after the first year, but the section states that the permit may be extended up to a maximum of three years. At last week’s hearing on the permit, abutters were decidedly opposed, claiming that Polaroid Corp. could make use of space in the old Forbes mansion on the company compound.
The board also voted last night to grant a special permit that would allow Bradley Johnson a variance to construct his house on Hazelwood Drive two-and-a-half feet closer to the lot line than allowed. During a hearing on his request last week, planning board member Francis Wisgirda claimed that the builder was “negligent” in laying the foundation for the house without checking its proximity to the lot lines.
The board also took under advisement requests for two permits to allow a mental health clinic and “parent and child activity center” in office space occupied by the Norfolk Mental Health Association in the United Church on Nahatan Street. The permit for the activity center would be a renewal of an existing permit under Section 18. The day-care center can take in no more than 24 pre-school children. Representatives of the association explained that the permit for the clinic would allow for outpatient counseling by 15 counselors on a one-to-one basis, said George M. Eysie. There were no abutters present for the hearing on either of the permits, according to the chairman.
