The Oldham School Committee is scheduled to hold a meeting on Monday night to formally evaluate whether the general contractor has successfully satisfied strict construction deadlines established for the completion of the new elementary school building.
Contractor Deadlines and School Readiness
The school committee previously instituted an August 21 cut-off date for completing all interior construction work, alongside a September 15 deadline for finishing exterior details. As of yet, the committee has not officially ruled on whether general contractor Melvin Goverman met the initial interior deadline, though a representative for the project’s architectural firm indicated that interior work was “pretty much” completed.
Despite the ongoing review of construction punch-list items for a building that originally opened late last winter, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Philip Coakley confirmed that the facility is completely prepared to welcome students for classroom instruction. Following a comprehensive on-site inspection of all Norwood public schools, Dr. Coakley reported that every building across town successfully completed summer refurbishing projects, leaving all facilities “completely operational” for today’s school openings.
Dr. Coakley emphasized that school administrators evaluated the Oldham facility primarily to ensure that essential safety and hygienic standards were fully satisfied, both of which passed inspection.
Board of Selectmen Delay License for Hills Department Store Food Counter
In municipal business, the Board of Selectmen voted to defer action on a Common Victualer’s license application submitted by Mrs. Mary H. Halligan of 14 Bright St. pending the receipt of a formal Board of Health report.
Mrs. Halligan appeared before the selectmen this week to outline her plans to operate a food counter at Hills Department Store, located within the Star Market Shopping Center on Nahatan Street. While the board noted that a favorable background report had already been returned by the Norwood Police Department, municipal regulations require a satisfactory Board of Health inspection and report prior to the final issuance of any commercial victualer license.
