The Norwood American Legion baseball team continued its dominant season on July 07, 1987, securing its 13th consecutive victory with an 8-6 win over Dedham at Balch Field.
Despite facing an early deficit, the first-place Zone 6 leaders demonstrated the resilience that has defined their winning streak, proving once again that their opponents require more than just a two-run lead to secure a win. Following the game, Norwood Coach Pete Wall expressed no surprise at the outcome, noting with confidence, “I think it takes more than two runs to beat us.”
The early momentum, however, belonged to Dedham. In the first inning, Don Krusz reached base on an error by Norwood shortstop Kevin Igoe, eventually scoring on a double by Nick DiVirgilio. Dedham added another run in the top of the third when DiVirgilio doubled for the second time, driving in Danny Donato. For a brief stretch, it appeared Dedham might hand Norwood a rare loss, but the Norwood lineup soon found its rhythm.
In the bottom of the third, Norwood staged a crucial rally. Igoe singled, Derek Ghostlaw earned a walk, and center fielder Ted Decareau smashed a triple to knot the score at 2-2. The offense exploded in the fifth inning against Dedham pitcher Steve Soba. Steve Grenham was hit by a pitch and subsequently scored on a long single by Igoe. With momentum shifting, Ghostlaw drew another walk, setting the stage for Jim Delbou, who launched a three-run home run. Not to be outdone, Decareau followed with a solo home run of his own, extending the Norwood lead to a commanding 7-2.
Although Dedham mounted a spirited four-run comeback in the final two innings, they ultimately fell short. Dedham Coach Jim Fitzgerald praised his team’s tenacity, stating, “I was proud of the way they fought back,” despite the disappointing result. B. Baxter was credited with the win for Norwood, while Soba took the loss. The game’s box score reflected an explosive offensive display, featuring doubles by Doherty, DiVirgilio, and Donato, alongside the key home runs from Delbou and Decareau. With this victory, Norwood further solidified its standing at the top of the league, moving one game closer to an undefeated streak.
