Defense and Second-Half Adjustments Salvage Victory

Entering the contest as heavy favorites in the Bay State Football League, Coach Art Gulla‘s undefeated Norwood squad found itself locked in a frustrating battle against an improving Braintree team coached by Eddie Beck. Though Norwood had previously tied Milton 8-8 and played powerhouse Wellesley to a scoreless tie, Saturday’s 12-0 victory relied entirely on a suffocating defensive effort and a breakthrough second-half passing attack.

“We were lucky to come out of this one as well as we did,” admitted Coach Gulla. “Offensively, we were awful. It was our defense that saved us. I thought that Braintree did a real good job and that Tom Semino is a fine football player.”

First-Half Struggles and Braintree’s Bold Challenge

Braintree entered the game as clear underdogs, heavily handicapped by injuries to key personnel—notably missing first-string quarterback Bob MacAllister and second-stringer Bob MacArthur. Despite the setbacks, the visiting Wamps gave Norwood fits during a scoreless first half marred by fumbles on both sides. Norwood lost three of four fumbles, while Braintree coughed up four of five.

Early scoring opportunities slipped away when a Braintree fumble recovered by Captain John Solomon gave Norwood prime field position, only for the Wamp defense to hold firm at their own five-yard line. Later in the second quarter, Tom Semino electrified the crowd by fading back to pass, evading pressure, and weaving on a brilliant 30-yard zig-zag run for an apparent touchdown—only to have the play called back by a holding penalty.

Breaking Through in the Second Half

The second half, however, belonged to Norwood’s evolving aerial game. The deadlock finally broke in the third period when Tom Shea connected with Mike Griffin on a 23-yard pass to the Braintree 13-yard line. An ensuing pass from Chris Effertz to Kevin Raferty advanced the ball to the three, allowing Tom Donovan to punch it over right guard for the game’s first score.

Norwood secured its insurance touchdown in the final period after Captain John Solomon disrupted a Braintree punt attempt. Though Braintree recovered, they were forced to relinquish possession on a fourth down at their own 39-yard line. Two eight-yard passes and a 12-yard run by Effertz set the stage for Kevin Raferty to scamper three yards over left tackle for the game-clinching touchdown.

Braintree attempted a dramatic late-game rally, highlighted by a 35-yard run by Morse that was unfortunately nullified by a penalty. In the waning minutes, the Wamps mounted a 40-yard drive to the Norwood 10-yard line, but time ultimately expired.

Reflecting on his team’s performance, Coach Eddie Beck expressed pride in his shorthanded squad. “I thought we played a much tougher ball game than we have been playing. Semino ran the club real well,” Beck noted. Meanwhile, Gulla made it clear his team has plenty of work ahead: “Offensively, our line didn’t do a thing. We worked on it all last week and thought we had our blocking problems solved, but obviously we don’t have them solved.”
