47-Year Teaching Career Celebrated at King Philip in Wrentham
Friends, educators, and community leaders gathered on Thursday evening at the King Philip in Wrentham to honor Miss Mildred I. O’Donnell, retired vice-principal and dean of girls at Norwood Junior High School, who concluded an exceptional 47-year career in education upon retiring in June.
The testimonial dinner highlighted a lifetime of dedicated service to youth and scholarship. Of her nearly five decades in education, Miss O’Donnell dedicated 40 years to the Norwood junior high school system, spending her final six years in administrative leadership as vice-principal and dean of girls.
A resident of Franklin, Miss O’Donnell graduated from local schools and Bridgewater Teachers College. Prior to settling in Norwood, she taught in Middleboro, West Medway, and Franklin. Beyond her educational duties, she has remained deeply active in the community as a past president of St. Mary’s Women’s Club and the St. Mary’s Division of the Norwood Deanery.
Colleagues and Dignitaries Pay Tribute
During the evening ceremonies—captured by photographer Kenneth F. McLean—Norwood Teachers Association President Frank Hilotta presented Miss O’Donnell with a commemorative silver bowl on behalf of local teachers, alongside numerous gifts and tributes from colleagues and former students.
Among those participating in the celebration were Superintendent of Norwood Schools Dr. Phillip Coakley and Robert Shanahan, joining scores of well-wishers paying tribute to her enduring impact on generations of Norwood students.
