It could easily have been Needham’s first win in two seasons. The Rockets out-passed and out-rushed their Norwood opponents by wide margins, and about the only thing they didn’t do offensively was out-score the Mustangs.

Instead of Needham walking away with a victory, it was Norwood that secured a hard-fought 12-7 Bay State League triumph.

Defense Steels the Mustangs to Victory

Norwood coach John Doherty credited his team’s gritty defensive unit for the win, while acknowledging that Needham fielded a formidable club. “Our whole defensive unit again played well,” Doherty remarked, singling out standout performances. “Mike Gulla turned in a super performance both offensively and defensively. Defensively Rick Kief, Rick Murray, Mike Poskus and Brian Johnson played excellent games.”

Needham coach John Bamberry lamented the costly mistakes and penalties that ultimately derailed his team’s offensive dominance. “We’re still making costly mistakes which hurt us. Some of the personal fouls hurt a little, especially the ones which gave Norwood the second touchdown,” Bamberry said. “Norwood is a good club and it was a tough game. They hung in there against us… We did everything against them but win.”

Gulla Leads the Scoring Attack

Mike Gulla provided all the offense Norwood needed, scoring both touchdowns on the day:

  • First Score (2nd Quarter): With 3:39 remaining before halftime, Gulla faked around to the left and evaded Needham pursuers to dash 15 yards for a touchdown. The drive was set up when Mike Poskus intercepted a Needham pass on the Rockets’ 37-yard line. Norwood attempted a two-point pass conversion from Chris Collins to Gulla, but the points were discounted due to an illegal procedure penalty, and the second attempt fell incomplete.
  • Second Score (4th Quarter): Norwood extended its lead to 12-0 by capping a 34-yard drive. Keyed by personal foul penalties against Needham, quarterback Chris Collins completed Norwood’s only pass of the day—a 12-yard strike to Poskus—moving the Mustangs to the 4-yard line. Another personal foul assessed against Needham moved the ball half the distance to the goal line, allowing Gulla to drive in for his second score.

Needham’s Rapid Response and Missed Chances

Needham answered immediately following Norwood’s first touchdown. Tony Bellomo fielded the ensuing kickoff at the 15-yard line and outran all pursuers for an 85-yard touchdown return, followed by a successful point-after kick by Tim McNamara.

“Our touchdown was scored on a wedge return which we usually don’t use, but we do practice it every week,” Bamberry noted of the explosive play, which marked the Rockets’ first touchdown of the season.

The Rockets squandered other golden opportunities. Early in the game, Robert Prescott rushed 65 yards from his own 18-yard line down to the Norwood 17 before being brought down. Needham pushed the ball to the 10-yard line before being stalled by a holding penalty and turning the ball over.
