Ground Attack and Suffocating Tempo Propel Norwood Past Rivals
Controlling the line of scrimmage from the opening whistle, the Norwood Mustangs handed the Walpole Rebels their first defeat of the season with a resounding 25–6 victory in a Bay State League clash. As reported by Patriot Ledger sports correspondent Al Tays, the win marked Norwood’s first triumph over Walpole since 1967 and served as head coach John Doherty’s first career victory against the rival program.
Photographed by Mike Kullen, the action-packed game at Turco Field was largely defined by Norwood’s relentless ground game. “We were coming off the ball real well,” Coach Doherty explained after his team converted three crucial fourth-and-inches opportunities by simply running right down the Rebels’ throats. Walpole coach John Lee lamented his squad’s lack of possession in the opening half, noting that the Rebels ran just six offensive plays before intermission. “What really hurt us was that we played for the pass, and they didn’t throw,” Lee said, praising Mustang quarterback Larry Brown for orchestrating a dominant game plan. Brown completed eight of 12 passes for 70 yards while directing a punishing rushing attack.
First-Half Momentum and Bill Breen’s Three Touchdowns
Norwood set the tone immediately with an exhausting 19-play, 63-yard opening drive that consumed nearly 10 minutes off the clock. The march culminated when quarterback Larry Brown rolled right and fired a seven-yard touchdown strike between two defenders to Brian Collins.
The Mustangs struck again early in the second quarter following a punt return to their own 49-yard line. A flawlessly executed play-action pass from Brown to Dave Steele—who broke two tackles to reach the five-yard line—set up a three-yard scoring plunge by co-captain Bill Breen. Shortly before halftime, Walpole fumbled the ensuing kickoff; eight plays later, Breen punched in his second touchdown from the four-yard line, giving Norwood a commanding 18–0 halftime lead.
Second-Half Scoring and Defensive Dominance
Walpole attempted a comeback in the third quarter when halfback Greg Aiello capped an eight-play, 34-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown run, narrowing the deficit to 18–6. However, any hopes of a Rebel rally were quickly extinguished in the final quarter.
With Walpole deep in its own territory, Norwood defender Don Donahue burst through the line to partially block a punt by the Rebels. Bill Breen returned the kicked ball to the Walpole 31-yard line, and three plays later, Breen exploded through a massive hole opened by Donahue, Daryl Stampfl, and Mark Conroy for a 25-yard touchdown run. Henry Stampfl kicked the extra point to seal the 25–6 final score.
With the victory, Norwood improved to 4–1, tying Walpole for second place in the Bay State League behind Natick. Reflecting on the monumental win, Coach Doherty noted, “It meant a lot to the community and the school. It was just a great victory. The real significance was that they were number one.”
