Approximately 3,500 residents turned out last night for an open house at Norwood Hospital, providing an opportunity for community members to tour the facility’s new wing after inclement weather and afternoon scheduling conflicted with the official August 29 dedication ceremonies.
Funding and Community Support
The expansion of the non-profit voluntary hospital is anchored by a new 100-bed wing, made possible through a massive fundraising effort that successfully raised $1 million by public subscription alongside a $350,000 federal grant under the Hill-Burton Act.
Significant contributions also came from the Norwood Hospital Women’s Aid—recognized as the third largest group of its kind in the Commonwealth—which pledged $50,000 toward the project. The women’s organization manages the lobby gift shop, coffee shop, and hospitality cart. Additionally, friends of Paul H. Draper and Marjorie E. Draper of Canton from across the state funded the creation of the “Draper Lobby,” tastefully decorated in muted green and tangerine furnishings against walnut paneling to honor their humanitarian efforts.
Modern Medical and Communications Technology
The new wing introduces advanced medical equipment and patient amenities designed to enhance care and operational efficiency:
- Automated Patient Monitoring: Demonstrated by Virginia A. Peachey, R.N., the hospital equipped recovery areas with an electronic monitoring system capable of automatically tracking the pulse rate, temperature, respiration rate, and blood pressure of up to nine patients simultaneously.
- Communications and Entertainment: A state-of-the-art integrated communications network operates its own internal radio and television stations, providing patients with entertainment and direct two-way voice communication with nursing staff from push-button bedside controls.
- Comfort and Specialized Care: Patient rooms feature modern push-button beds that adjust electrically. Other specialized spaces include X-ray suites featuring lead-shielded walls for radiation safety.
