The trustees of the Norwood Historical Society have been notified by Treas Theodore T. Marsh of the Dedham Historical Society that they had successfully lived up to the terms set forth under the will of the late Fred Holland Day of Norwood in their establishment of a society. He turned over to John R. Russell, treasurer of the Norwood Society, a check for $6500 left under the Day estate. Mr. Day, who was the last in the Day family line of old residents of this town, left an estate of $62,000.

His will made a proviso leaving certain money and stock in a fund to be known as the Joseph Day Trust, to be continued under the direction of the Dedham Historical Society, and if before Jan 1. 1970, a charitable organization should be formed under the name of the Norwood Historical Society and run for one year to the satisfaction of the Dedham Society, the trust fund should be turned over to the Norwood Society. If the Norwood Society were not formed before 1970, the fund was to go to the Dedham Society.

Shortly after Mr Day’s death a group of prominent residents of this town formulated plans for the formation of the organization; it was established, a house was bought which is the headquarters of the society, which has taken part during the past year in social events.

The Dedham Society sent a letter with the check, in which it was stated: “The Norwood Historical Society is financially and otherwise capable of acquiring, and for more than one full year has maintained a building suitable for its purposes, and it has, to the satisfaction of the Dedham Society, fulfilled the conditions imposed by the said will. Further, it was voted to congratulate the Norwood Society upon its public-spirited and quick response to the challenge set out in Mr. Day’s will.”
