As a new academic year approaches, Norwood High School senior Brian Burt, 17, of 15 Field Brook Drive, is working to ensure that local students are aware of their legal rights and the resources available to protect them.
Serving as a regional delegate to the state Student Advisory Council, Burt helps advise the state Board of Education and investigate potential violations of student rights across more than 40 public and private schools within the “Boston C” region.
Burt first became involved with the council after running for a student council seat two years ago. Following his election as one of four Norwood delegates, he was nominated and selected to represent the Boston C region directly on the state advisory board, working alongside fellow Norwood alternates Joseph Sweeney, David Kaster, and Ronald Seletsky.
Monitoring State Mandates and Launching Awareness Programs
During the upcoming school year, Burt and regional delegates will monitor local schools for strict adherence to three primary legislative mandates:
- Chapter 622: Prohibiting discrimination in public schools based on sex, race, national origin, or religion.
- Chapter 467: Requiring all school systems to publish a formal code of student conduct.
- Student Records Regulations: Governing student and parent access to personal academic files.
Although no formal violations have been reported at Norwood High School thus far, grievances meriting legal review can be escalated through the student advisory council to the state Board of Education and the state Department of Education.
