When the weather is warm, Nancy Newman and Dolly spend their afternoons swimming at a local public pool in Bonnevoie, surrounded by scenic views of steep hills blanketed in tall pines and dramatic rocky cliffs. On rainy or inclement days, the pair frequent local shops to help Dolly prepare wardrobes and supplies for her own upcoming exchange year. Evenings are packed with diverse social activities, ranging from movies to club dancing, with Nancy Newman observing that social outings in Luxembourg typically involve large groups of friends rather than traditional American-style dating.
Among her most memorable adventures, Nancy Newman attended a traditional Luxembourg wedding that offered a striking contrast to American matrimonial customs. The ceremony itself lasted an hour and featured the unique tradition of inviting all wedding guests directly to the altar alongside the bride and groom, after which attendees gathered at the bride’s family home to celebrate with champagne and gift-giving. Reflecting on her travels, Nancy Newman expressed deep gratitude for the immersion opportunity and looked forward to an upcoming grand reunion party celebrating all the A.F.S. (American Field Service) exchange students stationed across Luxembourg.
