Marion R. Flynn, 18, Picked in Cambridge—To Seek State and National Honors
Marion Rosamond Flynn, 18-year-old competitor for the title of Miss Greater Boston” won that honor last night from a field of 21 contestants at the Paramount Ballroom, Memorial Drive, in Cambridge.
After the 21 contestants had paraded across the orchestra stage three times and the judges had deliberated for three-quarters of an hour. Miss Flynn was chosen.
About two months ago. Miss Flynn, who lives at 44 Central St. Norwood, won another such contest held in a Boston theatre from a field of 3000 contestants.
So struck by the girl’s beauty, was he, the manager of the contest offered to make a contract with her for position as personnel manager at the suggestion of a colleague. He stated that such had not been his intention previously.
Miss Greater Boston” is 5 feet 7 inches tall. She weights 115 pounds, is blonde and blue-eyed. She graduated recently from the Norwood High School and has been occasionally an usher at a Norwood theatre. She wants to go to Emerson College to study dramatics. She has had experience in aesthetic dancing. She was dressed in a lavender organdie evening gown, trimmed with purple satin.
Miss Flynn will compete with other Massachusetts girls in an attempt to gain the title of “Miss Massachusetts.” If she wins that title she will be automatically entered in the national beauty contest at Atlantic City for the title of “Miss America.”
The contest was under the direction of Jack Brown, orchestra leader, and Joseph Levine.
The board of judges which chose Miss Flynn were Marian Bergeron, West Haven, Conn, who was chosen as “Miss America” in 1933; Mel Mazuko. picture editor of a Boston newspaper; George Harrison, of the Buick Automobile Co; Buster Holt, manager of a Boston theatre; Mary Harrison, a Malden school teacher; Jean Fleming, a dancing teacher, and Edward Casper, proprietor of a radio studio.
Second place in the contest went to Agnes Quinn, 18. of 17 Falmouth st. Belmont. Third place was awarded to Olive Poirier, 19, of 32 Clay st , Cambridge.
