A Life of Service and Faith

On April 30, 2023, the town of Norwood, Massachusetts, suddenly lost a dedicated community leader, family man, and professional with the unexpected passing of Gary M. Lee at the age of 67.

Gary’s life, rooted deeply in the soil of his hometown, was a model of civic engagement, multifaceted professional endeavor, and profound personal devotion.

Gary M. Lee was, in the truest sense, a product of Norwood. He was a 1973 graduate of Norwood High School, beginning a journey of education and service that would span decades. After high school, Gary continued his studies, graduating first from Lowell University (now UMass Lowell) and then from the New England School of Law. It was at law school that a defining personal chapter began; Gary met his future wife, Marguerite Ladas, a partnership of love and professional respect that would sustain them both.

Gary’s professional life was a varied and dynamic path, reflecting his intellect and versatility. Throughout his career, he worked as a sales engineer, an attorney, and a real estate broker. Not content to just serve clients, Gary displayed an entrepreneurial spirit, establishing his own private law practice, the Gary M. Lee, Attorney at Law office, and his own real estate brokerage, Gary Lee Real Estate. Regardless of the specific professional hat he wore, Gary derived his greatest satisfaction from the simple, yet profound act of getting to know people and using his skills to help them navigate complex legal and financial landscape.

This ethos of service naturally translated into the civic arena. Gary served his neighbors and the town of Norwood for many years as an elected member of the Town of Norwood’s Board of Selectmen. As a selectman, he applied his legal and business acumen to the administration of the town, ensuring its stability and growth. Beyond elected office, Gary was also a dedicated member of the fraternity, serving as a Mason with the Orient Lodge in Westwood.

In his limited personal time, Gary found joy and peace in the natural world. He cherished time spent hiking the trails of Massachusetts and beyond with his family and was particularly content when on the water. Gary also possessed a sharp mind and keen intellect, maintaining a lifelong interest in politics and being an avid reader, always seeking new knowledge and perspective.

Yet, despite his diverse interests and public success, the foundational forces of Gary’s life were internal. He was a man of deep, abiding faith, anchored by his devotion to God and his Catholic beliefs. His spiritual life was the center from which his actions flowed, providing a steady moral compass and a source of strength. This faith was inextricably linked to his paramount devotion: his family. Gary was the beloved husband of Marguerite and a dedicated, loving father to his four daughters, Katherine E. Lee, Patricia M. Lee, Mary E. Lee of Norwood, and Marguerite S. Lee of South Boston. He was the loving brother of Elizabeth Marsh of Norwood and Nancy Sceery of Rhode Island, and was sadly predeceased by his siblings, Robert E. Lee and Jacqueline Vitale. Gary was also a beloved son, preceded in death by his parents, Robert E. Lee and Marie E. (Mackin) Lee.

Gary’s sudden passing is an acute loss, not just for his extensive family—which includes many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews—but for the entire town of Norwood, which was bettered by his lifetime of professional competence and selfless civic dedication. His legacy will be one of help given, service rendered, and a deep, enduring love for his family and his faith.
