Norwood Public Schools Open Academic Year with Lower-Than-Projected Enrollment-September 4, 1986

As classes officially resumed yesterday across Norwood public schools, district administrators reported that overall student enrollment came in slightly below budget projections established during the spring, though high school numbers bucked the trend.

School Committee Chairman Roger Pelletier noted that opening day figures fell below anticipated targets, though not to an alarming degree. Overall district enrollment reached 3,501 students, compared to the projected 3,564 students.

Enrollment Breakdown Across Grade Tiers

• Elementary Schools: Recorded 1,694 attending students against roughly 1,716 projected.
• Junior High Schools: Recorded 747 students compared to 769 expected.
• High School: Reached 904 students, surpassing the budgeted projection of 884.
• H.O. Peabody Vocational School: Enrolled 156 students compared to an expected 173.

The Henry O. Peabody Vocational School experienced the most noticeable shortfall, which committee member Margery McKenna attributed to renovation delays from the previous spring that may have discouraged returning students. “There was such a problem with the school this year that they’re having to rebuild some of that constituency,” McKenna explained, expressing confidence that enrollment will steadily recover over the coming weeks as administrative adjustments take hold. Committee members emphasized that opening day figures have no immediate impact on staffing levels, with official certified counts scheduled for compilation on October 1.

During the meeting, the committee also paused to pay formal tribute to former member Charles Saraca, who passed away the previous week following a prolonged battle with emphysema. Member Joseph “Mitch” Pentowski delivered opening remarks recorded by Adams-Russell Cablevision, accompanied by remembrances from former member Thomas DiFrancia and fellow committee colleagues.
