A newly formed youth basketball organization has officially received the green light to utilize the town’s new civic recreation facility.
Weekend Basketball Program Funded
During a meeting yesterday, the Finance Commission approved funding to allow the Norwood Basketball Association—a newly formed non-profit organization—to use the recreation center on Nahatan Street on weekends. Commission member Norman E. Rickard announced that the commission authorized $5,500 from the town’s reserve fund to cover initial program operating costs.
The non-profit association will fully reimburse the town for the expense. Rickard noted that the commission enthusiastically backed the group’s overarching goal: involving hundreds of local children in organized weekend basketball programs.
High School Renovation Funding Proposal
In other town business, Rickard outlined the Finance Commission’s proposed funding strategy for upcoming renovations at Norwood High School, which will be presented for town meeting approval on October 15.
To meet the project’s estimated $4.7 million price tag, the commission proposes drawing funds from three distinct sources:
- Borrowing: $2.5 million via municipal borrowing.
- School Sale Proceeds: $1.5 million realized from the sale of the former Aaron Guild Elementary School.
- Stabilization Fund: $500,000 drawn from the town’s capital expenditure reserve fund (which currently holds approximately $1 million).
While the proposed figures total $4.5 million, Rickard noted that adjustments will be made if town meeting approves the project. To examine potential cost reductions without disrupting standard bidding procedures, the commission scheduled a joint meeting with the School Committee and the Permanent Building Construction Committee at Town Hall on Thursday.
Additionally, Rickard reported that the Finance Commission has elected Allan D. Howard to serve as its new chairman.
