As part of the Norwood Fourth of July Celebration in 1964, young athletes from across the town gathered at the Hawes Brook Pool for a highly anticipated swimming championship meet. The event showcased the competitive spirit of Norwood’s youth and was attended by recreation officials and local coaches.
In the top photograph, Recreation Supt. Richard E. Ready stood with several of the boy competitors. The podium finishers for the Closed Norwood Event included David Boch, who took first place; Andy Malacaria, who earned second place; and Steve Talbot, who secured third place. Other boys who participated in the meet included Steve Murphy, Ken Cavanaugh, Billy Clifford, John Coughlin, Tom Birmingham, Pete Gugliotta, Bruce Santoro, and Paul Nolan.

The lower photograph featured the girl competitors alongside their coach, Al Carver. For the girls’ Closed Norwood Event, Beth Wright claimed first place, followed by Rosemary Hopkins in second place and Karen Larson in third place. Additional girl swimmers who participated in the meet included Mary Lydon, Paula Taylor, Shirleen Kane, Joan Karling, Patty Clifford, Jane Lennon, Joanne Gauthier, Nancy Groh, Margaret Cassidy, Lorraine Hucksam, Debby Salter, Darien Whittemore, Elizabeth Hopkins, and Katrina Larson.
