Civic Center Finalizes Plans for Independence Day Mini-Marathon and Legion Field Boxing Tournaments
The recreation department has finalized a diverse summer athletic slate, locking in a community boxing tournament alongside a massive roster of events for the town’s traditional Fourth of July celebration. The upcoming boxing tournament will commence at 1 p.m. July 7 at Legion Field, open to all interested participants ages 12 and older. To ensure proper physical safety protocols, the department mandates that all entrants register before July 2 to be matched into appropriate age and weight categories. Contestants will be equipped with 14-ounce gloves, mouth guards, and protective headgear, with prizes officially awarded to all participants.
Concurrently, the department has teamed up with the local veterans council to coordinate a dense schedule of competitive activities for Independence Day. The morning itinerary begins from 9 a.m. to noon at the Civic Center, featuring different track and athletic events tailored for children ages 12 and under. Cycling events kick off at 10 a.m. with a two-mile bicycle race for youth ages 15 and under, charting a route from Norwood High School to the Wilson Street playground. For adult cyclists ages 16 and older, a separate three-mile race will launch at 11 a.m. from the Westwood town line at Winter Street, racing down to terminate at the Wilson Street playground.
The afternoon schedule moves into the center of town at 1 p.m. inside Guild Square, hosting specialized children’s doll carriage, bicycle, and tricycle decoration contests. Long-distance runners will take the spotlight at 2 p.m. for a grueling three-and-a-half-mile mini-marathon. The race route launches at the Westwood border, pushing through the center of town along the main transit corridors to finish at Mylod Street. To close out the holiday card, a massive team tug-of-war tournament is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Father MacAleer’s field, requiring 20-member teams with a 15-year-old minimum age baseline. The department will distribute prizes and community refreshments at the conclusion of the events, requiring all marathon, cycling, and tug-of-war entrants to complete registration cards at the Civic Center by July 1.
