F. J. Doebelli Released on Same Charge
Assaulted With Intent to Bob Miss Mary A. Hughes in February.
For the first time in its history, so far as is known, the Norfolk Superior Criminal Court sat all day Saturday on a case, and a jury returned late this afternoon a verdict of guilty against Peter A. Curran of Norwood on a charge of assaulting with intent to rob Mary A. Hughes, supervisor of the Norwood Telephone Exchange. Judge Walter P. Hall sentenced the defendant to five years and 10 months in the Concord Reformatory.
Frederick J. Doebelli, a sailor; who was with Curren on the February night when the assault and attempted robbery took place, was found not guilty on the same charge and his dismissal was ordered. It was the opinion of the jury that Doebelli was not near when the attempted robbery took place. Doebelli has been in jail two months, being unable, as was Curran, to furnish the $10,000 bail demanded by Judge Clifford B. Sanborn when probable cause was found in the cases in the Dedham District Court on Feb 27.
