Charles A. Richardson of 2 Shattuck Park, who has served as chief executive of Norwood Hospital since 1949, officially retired this week as executive director after 26 years of dedicated service.
He will be succeeded by David P. Buchmueller, who was previously appointed administrator of the hospital in 1973.
Transforming Norwood Hospital
When Richardson joined the institution as administrator in 1949, the facility was small and beset by financial difficulties. Over the course of his 26-year tenure, Richardson guided Norwood Hospital’s dramatic expansion into a modern 277-bed health center featuring an ambulatory care center, a comprehensive alcoholism unit, and a state-of-the-art maximum care unit.
Richardson noted that the maximum care unit had been his special pride. Widely considered a model for other hospitals, the specialized unit features private rooms maintaining a biologically clean atmosphere through advanced air filtration techniques.
Additional milestones under his leadership included the opening last December of the Foxboro Area Health Center to extend regional healthcare access to outlying areas served by the hospital.
Tributes and Professional Legacy
At a retirement celebration held in his honor last week, a bronze plaque expressing the hospital’s deep appreciation for his 26 years of service was unveiled in the main hospital lobby.
Widely recognized for his civic and professional contributions, Richardson was honored by the Norwood Chamber of Commerce as its “Man of the Year” in 1971. His extensive professional affiliations included:

- Life member of the Massachusetts Hospital Association
- Member of the American Hospital Academy of Medical Administrators
- Past president of the Greater Boston Hospital Association
- Member of the New England Hospital Assembly
