Local healthcare efforts received a significant financial boost when representatives of the Norwood Hospital Women’s Aid formally presented a $5,000 check to Hospital Administrator Charles A. Richardson. The funds were raised during the organization’s annual April Charity Ball, with $4,000 earmarked specifically to help establish the hospital’s planned coronary care unit, and the remaining $1,000 directed to the Development Fund.
Presenting the check alongside Administrator Richardson were Charity Ball Chairman Mrs. William F. Ryan, Women’s Aid President Mrs. William G. Street, and Mrs. Ernest W. Carlson.
Preparing for Annual Party Day Fundraiser
Building on the momentum of the Charity Ball, the Women’s Aid announced plans for its upcoming annual Party Day fundraiser scheduled for October 5 at the Lord Fox Restaurant in Foxboro. The afternoon event—featuring a tea, art exhibit, and fashion show—aims to pool resources with the Charity Ball proceeds to fully finance the specialized intensive care unit.
Party Day Committee Chairman Mrs. Catherine P. Stenberg emphasized the dedicated efforts of the membership, recalling how Party Days in 1964 and 1965 successfully raised funds to completely redecorate and refurbish the hospital’s Children’s Ward. Stenberg was joined by committee members Arlene Carlson, May Walsh, Selma Sternstein, Cele Youngdahl, Helen Donelan, Sue Jackson, Mae Harrington, Vera Anderson, and Kay DeFerrari.
Advancing Cardiac Care Technology
Hospital administration and medical staff have placed a high priority on the new coronary care unit, citing modern medical studies indicating that up to 62 percent of cardiac arrest patients can be saved when continuously monitored in a dedicated facility. The proposed unit requires complex electronic monitoring instrumentation capable of instantly recording heart activity at both bedside units and the central nursing station, supported by magnetic tape data storage, heart rate meter alarms, and physician warning devices.
