Over the weekend of August 28-30, 1970, a series of break-ins and thefts rocked the community. The primary targets? Car stereos and their valuable tape collections.

As word spread through the town, residents began to realize that they were facing an organized crime wave unlike anything seen before.
A Weekend of Chaos
The first reports came from the Norwood Arena parking lot on Saturday evening. Sami Nassab, a resident of West Roxbury, reported that his car had been broken into. The thieves made off with a tape deck and nine tapes worth $64. Not far away, Paul Hauptmar’s stereo tape deck valued at $80 along with 18 tapes were stolen from his vehicle.
The following day, Sunday, brought more bad news. Edward Caller of Canton discovered that his car had been broken into while parked at the Norwood Plaza. In addition to a camera and sunglasses worth $90, Francis Bechet’s tape collection valued at $100 was also taken from his vehicle. To make matters worse, a tape deck disappeared from another car belonging to Kerr Jane O’Sullivan of Randolph.
The Pharmacy Break-In
As if the car thefts weren’t enough, Monday morning brought an entirely different kind of crime. At around 6:30 AM, the South Norwood Pharmacy on Route 1 was broken into. Alerted by the drugstore’s alarm system, police arrived to find that the watch display case had been emptied.
The thieves had entered through the front door after breaking a front window. Despite their efforts, they were unable to take any other items from the store. The pharmacy staff later reported that several watches worth an estimated $500 had been stolen during the break-in.
Community Response
As news of these crimes spread throughout Norwood, residents began to feel uneasy about leaving their cars unattended in public areas. Local businesses and community leaders quickly sprang into action, organizing neighborhood watch programs and urging citizens to report any suspicious activity immediately.
The police department also increased patrols in the affected areas, hoping to catch the perpetrators red-handed. Chief of Police William J. O’Brien stated that his officers were working around the clock to solve these cases and bring the criminals to justice.
A Call for Caution
In light of these recent events, local authorities issued a statement advising residents to take extra precautions when parking their vehicles in public areas. They recommended locking all doors, rolling up windows completely, and removing any valuable items from sight before leaving cars unattended.
The police also reminded citizens that they could report suspicious activity anonymously through the Norwood Police Department’s tip line. This call for vigilance came as a stark reminder of the importance of community cooperation in maintaining public safety.
Looking Ahead
As August 1970 drew to a close, Norwood residents found themselves facing an uncertain future. While these crimes had shaken the town, they also brought people together in ways that might not have been possible otherwise. As the summer turned into fall, it remained to be seen how this experience would shape the community’s response to crime and public safety going forward.
