Although Independence Day is still weeks away, Norwood is already buzzing with preparations for what promises to be one of the town’s most ambitious and well‑supported Fourth of July celebrations in years. According to General Manager Edward C. Monahan, numerous civic groups, fraternal organizations, and town departments have stepped forward to assist in planning a full day of holiday activities.
Last year’s celebration—highlighted by free ice cream for every child, games, and prizes—drew large crowds and enthusiastic praise. This year, organizers are planning an even more expansive program.
Morning Festivities: Ice Cream, Games, and Playground Events
The day will begin with free ice cream and a variety of children’s games at playgrounds throughout town. These morning events are designed to give families a lively and wholesome start to the holiday.
Afternoon “Horribles” Parade
One of the most anticipated features will be a parade of “horribles”, a long‑standing New England tradition in which participants dress in humorous, grotesque, or satirical costumes. Prizes will be awarded to both organizations and individuals with the most creative and outlandish outfits.
The parade will wind through Norwood’s streets and conclude at the Civic, where the afternoon athletic program will begin.
Old‑Timers Baseball, Championship Game & Skills Contests
At the Civic, spectators will enjoy:
- An old‑timers baseball game
- A championship game
- A series of individual contests, including:
- Base running
- Long‑distance hitting
- Throwing competitions
- Other field events
Prizes will be awarded to winners in each category.
Evening at Elks Park: Concert, Entertainment, Movies & Fireworks
If this year’s celebration matches the success of last year’s, 8,000–10,000 people are expected to gather at Elks Park for the evening program, which will include:
- A band concert
- Live entertainment
- Outdoor movies
- A full fireworks display
Funding the Celebration: Goal of $2,000
Mr. Monahan estimated that $1,500–$2,000 will be needed to fund the day’s events. The current fund stands at $400, consisting of:
- A small carryover from last year
- A major contribution from the Norwood Messenger, representing proceeds from its special chronicle printed for the town’s 75th anniversary
To reach the goal, the Norwood Retail Trade Board will once again lead the fundraising drive, while the Town Recreation Department will coordinate event logistics.
Organizations Offering Support
Several groups have already pledged assistance:
- American Legion — offering manpower and support
- Loyal Order of Moose — donating the entire proceeds of its May 27 penny sale at Holman Hall
- Town Employees — planning to re‑stage their successful show “Remember When” for the benefit of the fund
These contributions reflect the broad community enthusiasm behind the celebration.
A Town‑Wide Effort for a Town‑Wide Holiday
With planning well underway and support growing across civic, fraternal, and business groups, Norwood appears poised to deliver a Fourth of July celebration that will surpass even last year’s success. If the weather cooperates and fundraising goals are met, residents can look forward to a full day of festivities that will bring the entire community together.
