No contest. Undefeated Norwood completely outmatched a depleted Framingham North squad yesterday, cruising to a commanding 44-6 victory in a Bay State League football contest that could easily have been even more lopsided.
For Norwood coach John Doherty and his staff, the afternoon’s primary challenges boiled down to keeping the score under control and preventing overzealous substitutes from racking up unneeded penalties against an injury-ravaged Framingham team.
“I knew before the game that Vinnie [Caputo] had a lot of boys hurt,” Coach Doherty said, expressing sympathy for Framingham North’s head coach. “I’ve been in that situation before and you just can’t expect your kids to perform.”
Instant Offense and Lethal Screen Passes
The game’s tone was set on the very first play when Norwood’s Rob Hill fielded the opening kickoff and blazed 85 yards for a touchdown. Things went from bad to worse for the Spartans on the ensuing kickoff when they fumbled, and after managing a net loss of four yards on their first three plays, punter David Steacie was forced to take a safety in the end zone when his knee touched the ground under pressure.
Framingham North attempted to disrupt Norwood’s attack by deploying six- and seven-man defensive fronts, successfully sacking quarterback John Doherty twice in the first half. However, the Mustangs quickly adjusted, utilizing screen passes to neutralize the heavy blitz.
“They shut off our offense in the middle, so we turned to the outside and screen passes,” Doherty explained.
- First-Quarter Screen: Late in the period, quarterback Doherty connected with Steve Cronin on a perfectly executed 47-yard screen and run. Crucial blocks downfield by center Paul McCracken, guard Harry Ward, and tackle Brian Cox cleared a path like dominoes, making it 16-0.
- Second-Quarter Screen: Another screen pass to Mike Connolly covered 53 yards (netting 22 after a penalty), setting up a drive that culminated in Fernando DeCosta rushing for tough yardage before executing a halfback option pass to Joe Travers for a 6-yard touchdown. Tom Cronin added his third of six extra points, pushing the lead to 23-0 at halftime.
Second-Half Depth and Defensive Lockdown
Norwood wasted no time after intermission, with Doherty hitting Travers again—this time on an 8-yard touchdown strike—just two minutes into the third quarter to stretch the advantage to 30-0.
While Framingham North avoided a shutout when Billy Brooks intercepted a pass from backup quarterback Mike Conti and returned it 61 yards down the sideline, Norwood’s deep bench continued to roll up points:
- Mike Pusateri, the game’s leading rusher with 54 yards on five carries, shook off a 55-yard touchdown run called back due to an offside penalty by bursting through on an inside trap for a 41-yard score in the fourth quarter.
- Junior back John Carroll capped the scoring by intercepting an Eric Newman pass and racing 71 yards down the left sideline.
“We have a great young backfield and it was good that we were able to get everybody some playing time,” Doherty remarked, praising the ground work of Pusateri and John Sullivan. He also highlighted Tom Cronin’s six successful extra-point kicks, noting it would boost confidence moving forward.
While the offense piled up 44 points, Norwood’s defense pitched a suffocating shutout in the trenches, holding Framingham to a meager 17 yards rushing and 28 yards of total net offense. Defensive stalwarts Barry McDonough, Paul Cunningham, Brian Cox, and Lloyd Taylor spearheaded the relentless pass rush and run containment.
