Republic Plumbing Supply Co. to Construct Office and Warehouse Addition on Fire-Ravaged Route 1 Plot

The Turnpike Lumber yard on Route 1, which was destroyed by fire last year, is gone for good.
The owners of the adjacent Republic Plumbing Supply Co. announced last night that they have purchased the property and will use it for an addition to their building.
The new addition will be utilized for office, retail, and warehouse space. A fire last March destroyed two sheds on the lumber yard, and another fire in August finished the job, ripping through the main building. Fire officials could not determine the exact causes of the blazes, but stated they suspected vandals.
William E. Duggan and Edward M. Duggan, owners of the plumbing supply company, sought two special permits and a variance from the Zoning Board of Appeal last night to allow the construction of the building addition. The board will view the commercial site this coming Saturday before making a final decision. The requested special permits would allow parking in an adjacent residential district and the physical extension of the building without the required 100-foot setback from Route 1. The building currently stands about 37 feet from Route 1. The variance would permit the commercial addition without the required 75-foot buffer strip near a residential zone located in the rear of the site. The proposed building addition would be located about 200 feet from the residential area.
