Eight Percent Increase Parallels Police and Fire Settlements to Take Effect July 1

The Board of Selectmen last night granted an eight percent cost-of-living increase for department heads, women traffic supervisors, and all other non-union employees.

Part-time employees who work more than an average of 20 hours per week are covered under the new measure. Not included in this action are public works employees, since no contract settlement has been reached with their union. Selectmen acted directly on the formal recommendation of Town Manager John J. Carroll, which was readily approved without comment.

The pay raises, which do not preclude further merit raises by selectmen for certain municipal executives, will be met under the $1.1 million appropriated at the annual town meeting to cover pay raises for all municipal employees. According to John J. Carroll, Town Clerk and Accountant Robert M. Thornton informed him that independent boards, such as the town treasurer, library trustees, and health board, will follow the selectmen’s lead. The eight percent adjustment reflects similar pay raises previously secured for union workers like police officers and firefighters for the upcoming fiscal year beginning July 1.
